Speck

Today Daisy gave a name to a stuffed animal for the first time. This is a milestone, so I'm recording it. Mark asked her the name of her stuffed dog (a kind gift, and very much appreciated, from Bill Hamilton) and she said, "Speck." She's been calling him "Speck" all day, too, so apparently she meant it. She said at one point, "Find my dog named Speck!" So there you have it. Speck. And now I have to go get her before she breaks her neck falling off the coffee table.

I recall a hideous stuffed doll around our house named "The Ghost of Oosten."

I remember the Ghost of Oosten! I don't remember him being a stuffed doll, though-- more like an invisible friend. We had a screen door that used to bang open and shut in the wind and we said it was the Ghost of Oosten coming and going.

The makebelieve friend I am dying for someone to confirm is "Donkey Gray." No one seems to remember him but me. Dad, am I crazy or did we have a junkheap at some point in our backyard? I have distinct memories of climbing up on this heap, which had things like wooden planks in it, and pretending I was riding "Donkey Gray." But Mom doesn't remember and I doubt Maggie would.

Speck does sound a bit Dr. Seuss-y. Daisy loves Dr. Seuss, too.

The first time Sarah named an animal was in a grocery store in Sebastopol. She was 2 years old. The cashier asked her what her horse's name was and she said he didn't have a name. The cashier persisted and persisted; Sarah kept saying the horse doesn't have a name. Finally, exasperated, Sarah said his name was "HORSE-RAT!"
The cashier then insisted that that couldn't possibly be the case. We finished our transaction and took a disgusted Sarah home. M.B.
