Dad's line to me today

"Sarah, I'm doing you a favor by telling you this: no one, other than family, is going to want to look at those ultrasound photos."

Here's another line :-) Now what about names?

Hi Melissa!! I am so excited I can't stop blogging (though I will, to go to Valentine's Day dinner). I am afraid to discuss names...too superstitious or something :-)

And, your dad is obviously wrong because I wanted to see your ultrasound pictures. I want to see the mega one too. :-)

So wrong! I am so excited to see them. But of course, I am of childbearing age. Nearly past. Am I past? Arrrggg!!!!!

The name should be Peony or Calliope. No reason.
Post the damn ultrasounds already! :-) If you need a scanner, I have one.

I do also like Calliope, and only partly out of my irrational love of the carnival music of Tom Waits, in which the calliope is sometimes prominently featured. (Go here and click "calliope" in the left menu to see more, including a funny picture of Waits nearly rattling the teeth out of his head while playing one: http://www.keeslau.com/TomWaitsSupplement/Menus/instruments-frameset.htm )

I actually knew a woman in college who was of Greek descent and who was named "Kalliopy" (KAY lee OH pee). Luckily, my drolly funny poetry professor warned me about the correct pronunciation before I faux pas-ed my way into her bad graces..."Don't EVER call her 'Calliope'." Guess he had that misfortune at some point...

For some reason that link didn't come through. Let's see what happens if I try again.

OK, so although the link looks incomplete, it seems to be alright if you highlight the whole thing and then copy and paste it into your browser. Weird...

...wow, imagine the pictures of Little Girl Meritt on cyberspace! Well, hmmm...do you really want to scan them, Deb? Do you think people would be horrified? I think she's beautiful, but I did tell Dave that she has a small resemblance to a pickled space alien.

Okay, I love Peony and Calliope! Going to Michael's link now....

I would love to see your ultrasound pictures, too. I will always be thrilled to see pictures of Little Girl Meritt. Congratulations, Sarah.

Alas, your dad is wrong! Those of us who don't have our own kids have to live vicariously through you... so I'd love to see the girly ultrasounds! (although I can probably skip the delivery photos, thanks ;-)). It's exciting as it's the first time I've lived in the same place as a friend expecting a baby (well, OK I live in the East Bay, but still!). Congrats.

Okay!! Thank you for the support, and anyone can see the ultrasound pics who wants to; they are soooo fascinating :-) Mark and I had several lengthy conversations last night about whether what we were looking at was a kneecap or a hand.
There is also considerable ambiguity as to whether another fuzzy line is a spinal cord or an arm. But that should not detract from the enjoyment of perusing them...it's sort of like a Rorschach test. If you see an arm rather than a spinal column, you may be a psychopath.

PS
There will BE NO delivery photos. So no one has to worry about being subjected to them.

I love Tom Waits, too, Michael; fabulous picture. A Greek woman named Calliope--in high school there was a girl named Athena... I wonder if that's a common name in Greece? It seemed utterly exotic and tantalizing at the time, especially since Athena is the goddess of wisdom...this particular Athena I remember as more beautiful than wise, however. But I didn't know her all that well so maybe I shouldn't say that.

Let's see the pictures!
The lack of clarity in the ultrasound is to give you a chance to bring the baby into focus.
As to the line--neither a favor nor correct.

Oh, thank you, Firetruck!! Well, you can definitely see the ultrasound pics when I see you (next month--hurrah!). I don't know how to put them on the blog but I've made a million copies, too, that can always be mailed to people. I have four poses: two profile shots, with legs up (the ones Mark calls her "TV-watching position-to-be"; a pic of her holding her hand up near her face where you can see all her fingers; and, somewhat less excitingly, a pic of the bottom of her foot. Of course, I find all these things deeply exciting. I never knew a foot could be so exciting. I can't wait to see you and Amy and show them to you!

I think it's unanimous - Sarah's father is wrong! I have to confess to being a family member, but I have bought a diary book and pasted a copy of the ultrasound picture in it. In this book I will write my thoughts and experiences re Baby Girl Meritt and one day she will be blown away by her ultra-portrait and the description of the first sighting of her by her biggest fan club!

Dearest M.B.--I know you realize this already, but your fondness for the ultrasound picture only proves Dad's point (that family members, especially the nearest ones, will be interested). But thank you! I *hope* you are right and she likes looking at the ultrasound someday; perhaps she will be horrified!
