Thank you, Deb!

The test Deb told me about just helped me a lot. I am a nerd. Apparently, I am *not* a geek, the category in which I did most poorly. I think I really am a nerd, too, because it bothers me that the person who wrote this description hyphenated the phrase "No-longer" and put two colons in the final sentence. Here's where you can take the test, if you are interested (if you are not, you are definitely not nerdy, geeky, OR dorky):

Sarah's rating:

Pure Nerd

69 % Nerd, 17% Geek, 21% Dork

For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/ interactions. You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd. The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

You scored higher than 76% on nerdiness

You scored higher than 11% on geekosity

You scored higher than 28% on dork points

Deb's second highest rating was geek and my second highest rating was dork; what does that mean?

Okay, this helps; the test offers these definitions.

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

Okay, I see: Debbie and I actually have the same rating. We are both Pure Nerd. Mark just got "Tri-Lam Material," even though nerd was his highest rating at 60%. He got 56% dork and is up in arms about it, claiming that it isn't accurate. His geek rating was 21%.

Mark has challenged my Dork rating being lower than his. He says I should have answered Yes to, "People on occasion point out something that has gone awry with my physicial presentation (i.e., fly unzipped)." My fly is not usually unzipped or anything like that, so I said no, but Mark pointed out that my shirt is often on backwards or inside out.

Apparently, I am "Modern, Cool Nerd"--

65% Nerd
52% Geek
47% Dork

I don't like the definition of "dork" by the way, as it doesn't take into account my simultaneous self-deprecatory and self-righteous nature. Part of my healthy socializing involves my dorkiness. So pbbttt.

Now I feel like a total dork.

Hee hee hee. You modern, cool nerd. In all earnestness, I now think Mark must be right that the dork-meter on that test is off, because you are definitely not a dork, according to their definition of the word.

I retook the test and modified one or two answers about which I was on the fence and dropped my dork rating considerably. Though I wasn't quite "up in arms" about it as my dear wife says (though why do I protest so much?!), I was a bit surprised at the depth of my dorkdom. However, in retrospect I think it's fair. Whatever packaging I've managed to assemble around myself I'm a dork at heart I guess. I just didn't think the idea of being "awkward in social situations" really applied. In fact, I'm only awkward with people I know and care about. With strangers and on a very superficial level, I'm quite comfortable, even relaxed and pleasant.

Anyone who overanalyzes this test gets 10 extra nerd points. :-)

Is a "modern, cool nerd" otherwise known as an "ironic hipster"? Weezer fans, unite.

Here's a nerd question: in my first sentence, I used the numerals for "ten." I did hesitate for a split second because in general, I have imposed the "use letters for single-digit numbers" rule on myself and for a moment I couldn't remember how I treat 10. Another habit a friend of mine and I share is trying to key in the microwave cooking time in the most efficient manner. For instance, instead of 1:30, I might key in 90 because that saves a digit. Of course, the split second it takes to think that may use up the keypress time I saved.

Do any other certified nerds share in these anal-retentive behaviors?

Deb, I allllways have that "spell numeral out or type in digit" dilemma, and the rule I go by (though I'm not sure it's the right one) is to spell out numbers UNDER ten...though sometimes, that looks wrong and I have a panic. So I definitely share that anal retention, if not the microwave one. And I have overanalyzed the test, so give me my ten extra nerd points NOW!

Well, apparently it’s possible to take the test and NOT rate as a nerd, dork, or geek. A friend of ours just took it and rated as “Joe Normal.” He was 1% a nerd, 0% a dork, and 44% a geek. I can't imagine how someone gets 1% nerd and 0% dork on this test; I KNOW this person?? I thought he’d get the geek rating because he knows everything about the L.A. Rams (and collects their memorabilia), has a Star Wars collection and a KISS collection, has attended KISS conventions, and has participated in a KISS fan-fiction. I think he might also like sci-fi and video games. But he still got the Joe Normal rating because he rated under 50% in the geek category. How is that possible, with those impressive qualifications??
I would question the veracity of the test, but it really did peg me--nerd is definitely more accurate for me than dork or geek.

Oh my god, I am 91% nerd. That is very, very nerdly. Overall: 91 % Nerd, 26% Geek, 21% Dork. I'd say that's fairly accurate, albeit disturbing. The test suggests that I might also be interested in Buffy--I own seasons 1-4 on dvd.

I took the test again because I wanted to post the little blurb they gave in which they defined "Modern, Cool Nerd." This time, though, my score changed and I was ranked as "Pure Nerd." I took it two more times and tried changing the answers even. Still "Pure Nerd." Hmm ...

And Hayden, I own seasons 1-7; I think this fact highlights not only my nerdiness, but also my geeky blind devotion. (AND I'm moving to Seattle on Saturday!!!! Let's hang out sometime soon.)

I think it is so funny that you took the test again to try to get the blurb, Mita...and you couldn't get Modern, Cool Nerd again! I took the test again to see if I could get a "Joe Normal" score like the guy I know, and I managed to get it, but I couldn't get my nerd and dork ratings down as low as his.
I have to insist that Hayden should be proud of her high Nerd rating. I don't know if she feels that way, but it is SUCH a good thing!

Wow, Haydelina, that is the nerdliest rating I've seen yet!! I am so proud of you! It fits, too, that dork is your lowest rating. I am so impressed by the 91% nerd. I wonder where I went astray to get a meager 69%? Maybe it's because I said I didn't sit at the front of the classroom or read textbooks for fun...I am trying to remember what other questions may have been my downfall.

The test probably decided that anyone who would actually take the test again in order to achieve "Modern, Cool Nerd" couldn't possibly be that modern, or cool.

hee hee! You are totally right! The test KNEW you were re-taking it, which meant you were dorky, which meant you were totally NOT Modern, Cool Nerd :-)

I got "Pure Nerd," although not as high above 50% as some other folks.

Every once in awhile I have to stop myself from saying, "WOW, this quiz like totally KNOWS me!" (Which, again, proves some flavor of nerdigeekidorkiness on my part.)

Let me point out that I'm still the dorkiest of all!

Well, I guess the test can't know EVERYTHING.
