I lost my brand new cell phone
That's right; I lost the new cell phone that I had in my possession for oh, almost a week.
I am having a very, very bad day. Not only have I lost my new cell phone, but before that, I got hit by a car, quite hard, while sitting in our car, parked by the side of the road. The driver drove away without even stopping to see if I or the car was all right. A good samaritan across the street who saw what happened wrote down the model, make, and license number of the car, which was a very kind thing to do, especially given that I was too shaken up to do it myself; but, when we went to the police station, we learned there's nothing we can do unless I prove that I or our car have sustained injuries. Our car was not damaged, at least not visibly so (I maintain he took some of the paint off the bumper and bent the license plate), and it seems *I* am undamaged, but we had to go to the hospital to be sure. When something like this happens they want to monitor you for 6 hours after the impact, and they were particularly keen to keep an eye on me because it turns out I was having small contractions (though these can be caused by dehydration, so it might have nothing to do with the accident).
After the six hours, they said the contractions had stopped, so I was released to go home, but discovered I had lost my cell phone somewhere in the process of getting so flustered by all the stuff that happened today. I am feeling terribly despondent.

Sarah! I am so sorry! Stupid jackhole driver. I have honestly never understood how someone could hit another person with their one ton car and NOT stop and make sure evrything is ok. How do those people sleep at night?
I'm glad you are ok. Check under the front seat for your phone, I've lost mine there before. :)
My regrets also! I can't believe it. That's so wrong! I'm glad you're safe, though. I wonder if this hit and run stuff is a thing - that big accident last week in the Castro had something to do with someone running a red light and hitting someone in a parked car. The world is so filled with @ssholes.
Let us know if we help you in ANY way, I mean it. ANY.
poor baby! don't worry about the cell phone, the important thing is that you're fine. Take care. :-)
Oh no Sarah. What an unsettling experience. I'm so glad you were thoroughly checked out, and now you can relax. Take good care.
Thank you, everybody! I really, really appreciate it :-)
I am feeling a little better today
Beth--I totally agree. I find hit and runs *astonishing*. I just don't understand how anyone could do that. And this is the second time it's happened to me in the Bay area. The first time, a good samaritan who saw what happened actually pursued the driver and wrote down most of his license plate number for me, came back and gave it to me! But because we didn't have the complete number, the police officer said probably nothing would come of it (and nothing did). However, the good samaritan writing down the info. is key because we were able to prove it was a hit-and-run and therefore insurance covered all the damages. Grrrr, though, on these hit and runners. It is SO WRONG! It really brings out the morality in me.
Deb-- oh yes, I think hit and runs are getting more common. That's what the police officer told me. There's also a rash of drivers hitting pedestrians, in cross walks. Grrrr again, as someone who walks a lot in this city. Cars have come pretty close to me in cross walks before deciding to hit their brakes. (And it often happens near the university, where you'd think drivers would be especially looking out for students walking.) Grrrr. I am grumpy about all this. Thank you for offering to help, Deb! Can you, uh, get me a new chip in my brain that prevents me from losing my third cell phone in a week and a half? :-)
(Seriously, any suggestions? How do all you non-cell-phone-losers manage it?)
Hi all,
Some stats from an essay by Rebecca Solnit (I think around 2000):
"In San Francisco, faster and denser traffic, shorter walk lights, and more belligerent drivers intimidate and occasionally mangle pedestrians. Here 41 percent of all traffic fatalaties are pedestrians killed by cars, and more than a thousand walkers are injured every year. In Atlanta, the figures are 80 pedestrians killed per year and more than 1,300 injured. In Giuliani's New York, almost twice as many people are killed by cars as are murderd by strangers -- 285 versus 150 in 1997."
Though the focus here is on pedestrians, the passage shows how aggressive and uncaring drivers in general have become.
Sarita! how terrible! :( I echo everyone else in saying how sorry I am and how scary and yucky and aggravating the whole ordeal must have been. i am so glad that you and the un-baby are OK. :) I am sending you very large hugs (these hugs are just large hugs, not large in any way to insinuate that they need to be large in order to fit around you...they are just happy big hugs....um...you know what I mean...)
shutting up now. glad you are intact. cell phone is WAY less important than the well-being of the Sarita!
Thank you, Arweena! And, no worries about the "large hugs": I _am_ large. The doctor's estimates have the baby a full pound and 6 oz. larger than the books estimated she'd be at this age!! (Of course, I know these are all estimates... but still. I am a little concerned that this is going to be a very big baby.)
Thank you for the stats, Marky. It's good to have some empirical backup for my grouchy generalizations!
Oh my god -- how awful! Hope you guys are OK.
Thank you, Matt! Yes... I guess a lot of it was just annoyance and a scare.
