Moving is sad

That says it all. I hate moving, but it only makes sense for us to move into a 2-bedroom, since there is a baby coming. So we are moving. I am soooooo sad. This is the only time in my life I ever felt motivated to photograph my apartment. I even photographed the BATHROOM-- that is love.

Seems to be going around -- looks like we're finally buying this new house. The full story here.

Congratulations, and good luck.

I'll second that: here's to a non-dysfunctional move for you all. That was a cool place; I hope your next one is even better. Send us pics when you're settled in!

Honey,

I'm moved by your post; I'll miss this place too. It's so bright and charming, so old-fashioned yet not depressing. I'll miss our view of the park, our high ceilings and wood floors -- but mostly I'll miss that this was our place, our sanctuary. Here's to the new apartment and life with our little rocker girl!

The new place will by just as cool, just as warm, just as wonderful as the old place, because what made that apartment special had nothing to do with the views, the floors, or the high ceilings. Remember, you two made Oak Patch cool, and those were not intrinsically cool apartments! I'm so happy I'll be in town to see you guys settle into your new place. Do you need moving help?

Thank you guys so much--you have made me feel a lot, lot better. Honestly, I am in some kind of mourning-grieving mode right now. It is silly. Linda, you are absolutely right--we will take our things to the new place and make it homey and cozy, I know it. We have always been able to like the places we lived, no matter what the basic structure was that we were working with. The crazy feeling I'm having, now, is that we may actually be *losing* a small amount of space--this is a pretty big one-bedroom and we are moving to a small two-bedroom. The thing that didn't occur to us when we looked at it is that there is no *dining* area whatsoever, and I'm feeling uncertain about the storage, even though they are giving us a storage area in the garage, which will be happy... Katherine, if you read this, you saw the place--what do you think??

Anyway, thanks again for cheering me up, everyone! Matt, I'm going to go check out YOUR new house now--how exciting.
PS Mita, did I forget to tell you I was moving? I can't believe how absent-minded I am.
PPS Albert, no Kansas City... move HERE and pay megabucks to live in a tiny box with your whole family, like us!!

Oh, forgot to mention: Linda, you should definitely come see our new little place when you visit. I would hate to put you to work moving over your long weekend, though! But please come see it with us. You're good at spatial relations; maybe you can help us figure out how we are possibly ever going to maneuver in and out of our MINISCULE parking space designated to us in the garage!

When you are lugging a squirming Daisy up two flights of stairs, you will be happy that it is no longer three flights of stairs.

Yeah, you're right, Dad... and I think the storage unit in the garage may be a blessing, so we can keep some of the baby's stuff in there (like stroller equipment) instead of lugging it upstairs. But it does seem kind of funny that we are trading in 3 flights of stairs for 2, instead of having found a place with no stairs or with an elevator!!

Let me first say that you have the cleanest bathroom EVER. Not a hint of the red and black mold and scum we have growing in our tub (doesn't it make you want to hang out at our place?). I'm duly impressed.

Secondly, I won't miss your old place cuz I've still never seen it! But I know what you mean, it's hard leaving a piece of history behind. Omigod are you totally going to like, change your decor in the new place? What neighborhood are you moving to? Let us know if you need help.

Thank you for the bathroom compliment, Deb! I am obsessed with cleaning the bathroom, it is true. If only I were obsessed with the other rooms. I am sorry you never saw our place, too--we hardly ever had people here, largely because we were on such thin ice with the landlords all the time. They were eager to seize any opportunity to get rid of us, due to our cats, which is at least one thing I won't miss about living here. I hope you'll come see the new place!!

Oh, oops--I need to answer a few more questions, and also move past the unlucky number "13" comments. We are not moving far--just to the other side of Geary. So instead of being near Golden Gate Park (sniff! wahhh!! much love) we will be near Lake Street and the Presidio... and Lake Mountain Park (Mountain Lake Park? I seem to have permanent confusion about the name, even though Mark has told me it a million times). We are on 22nd between Lake and California... you must come see it as soon as we have stuff in there. We can't see the beautiful park anymore, but we do have a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. And, oh, we are not changing the decor too much, or at least, not until we have to "babyproof," whatever that means... we are both HORRIBLE at change and addicted to nostalgia for our things.

Hi Sarah!
I think the new place has its good points too! Very sunny, clean, and feels spacious. You might be losing some storage space, but I think it's less than you think, since you have the storage space downstairs plus the closet in the baby's room (remember, you can stow some stuff in there--she's too little to complain!).

I do agree the new place felt cold and stripped of identity when we were there, but I think once your funky furniture and books are filling the place, it will start to feel cozy and like home!

The dining area is cramped, yes, but you do have that lovely bay view from one chair (assuming you'll have your table in the NW corner of the kitchen). A nice place to sip your tea...

I can understand that you will miss the GG Park view and the hardwood floors since that's what I love about your old place... but one less flight of stairs sounds blessed to me! And there is a cute row of houses across the street. Also, a whole new neighborhood to explore with BGM when she arrives...

Oh I see...that looks like a really cool location. It's just as far away from our place as your current location (not that that means anything) but it could be fun right by the China Beach and Mountain Lake Park. The Presidio's nothing to sniff at. :-) Think of it - a whole new neighborhood of restaurants to try out!

Yes! Thank you, Deb. I am trying to focus on those things. We will be closer to Clement Street now, and that's a great place to look for restaurants. There's a great deli on the corner, a convenience store right there, and a laundromat, and the 4-Star movie theatre is 2 blocks away (not that we will probably be going there often, having a newborn and all!). I am really excited to find out what nearby park walks there are, in the Presidio or Mountain Lake Park... and there are 2 playgrounds within walking distance, which has to be a NEW concern of mine!! (Signaling big life change: nearby bars not so important; nearby playgrounds quite important :-)

I appreciate the positive comments about the new place, Katherine... my first eye-witness! Yeah...the baby's closet is definitely going to be MY closet :-)
Did some exploring of the area today and discovered that while I may be losing my proximity to Golden Gate Park, there are *gorgeous* Presidio beaches and parks right around the corner... went to Baker Beach today, and Deb mentioned China Beach, which I still need to find... all this is right down 25th (we are on 22nd), and further east--around 10th or so I think--is Mountain Lake Park. Actually, the tree-y beauty of this area at least equals Golden Gate Park. (But I could SEE GG Park from my window in the "old" place. It hurts to write that.)
