Diversion

I enjoyed this one (stolen from Matt's blog)... thought I'd do a bit better, since I am from Long Island. Then again, was I ever from L.I., spiritually? In college, when my dormmates and I played "guess where I'm from," I got "Pacific Northwest." I don't know how much less Long Island-y that could be. (For the record, I think "Pacific Northwest" was the wrong choice for me... I am SO smoldering and dark beneath the easygoing surface :-)

You Are 37% New Jersey!

You've got a little Jersey in you. Not too bad, however you could have done a lot better. Based on this score, you may not actually be from New Jersey. You're missing out!

How New Jersey Are You?

Actually, "smoldering and dark beneath an easygoing surface" would describe the Northwest pretty well tectonically...Having gone to a college that was approximately 97% Lawn Guy landers, I would have to say that you're about as far from their typical m.o. as can be conceived. You must have had some really exciting times there in high school.

You're not going to like this, but you are probably from the same place your parents are from, along with people like Mowry and Jack and Sally and Tim. In other words, you are from Southern California in the 1950s. But modified by this and that.

Your native music: Johnny Ray, the Beach Boys, Les Paul and Mary Ford.

Native dance: the conga

Favorite book: The Ninth Wave

Favorite color: tan

Best Movie Ever Made: East of Eden

Best Actors: Harry Bellafonte & Leslie Caron

I must politely disagree about Pacific Northwesterners, Billiam... :-) I do not remember the "smoldering" so much. I remember genuine easygoingness and a slow, slow pace... slow cars, slow service, slow raining... and also, genuine kindness and compassion for other human beings. I had the nicest neighbor in the WORLD when I lived in Oregon. When Mark moved to SF a little ahead of me, leaving me carless, she and her husband gave me a copy of their CAR KEYS, telling me to use it whenever I wanted, and filling the gas tank every morning for me!! Would that happen in many other places on this earth? Me not think so.

...okay, I may have totally missed your point, Billiam. Tectonically, I see.

Are you joking, Dad?? I am most certainly not from Southern California! I lived on Long Island the first 18 years of my life, so I think it's safe to say that's where I'm from... those are the schools I went to, and the people I knew, and the geography that was so familiar. And besides, Mom is from Ohio, not So Cal!

But I do like _East of Eden_. Is that really your pick for best movie ever?

I agree with your assessment, Sarah. In fact, there's always a bit of cultural vertigo for me returning to Philly from the Northwest: from the land of easy smiling hippies to the parking lot of Philadelphia International Airport and enraged screams of "MOVE YOUR %^&*% TRUCK!!!"

East of Eden was a big movie for us at the time. No, it isn't my pick for best movie ever. (Today I was trying to find my password for COMCAST email, and they asked me the verification question, which was Name Your Favorite Movie. I had no idea which movie that was. Totally forgot whatever it was I said to thm originally.)

I don't know which movie I think is best. La Strada, The Seventh Seal, Blood Simple, Some Like It Hot, On The Beach, Shane, The Maltese Falcon, The Third Man, Carrousel, North By Northwest would be in the running, along with others.

Hey, I'm 61% Jersey! Honest to god!
I'm very proud - I guess it's all those years on Long Island.

But Mom, I was on Long Island almost as long as you were and I wasn't nearly as Jersey! :-) Go figure.

How could so many people be more Jersey than I am? What am I doing wrong, and how can I rectify it?
